Winifred Mak

Dr. Mak is the Principal Investigator of the Mak lab.  Dr. Mak is a native of the UK and obtained her medical degree from the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy’s and St. Thomas (UMDS), London and her PhD from Imperial College, London.  Dr. Mak is a physician-scientist with long-standing research interests in placental development, epigenetics, birth outcomes of infants born after in vitro fertilization (IVF) and more recently sperm and recurrent pregnancy loss.  Clinically, Dr. Mak is a Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI) subspecialist and nationally recognized recurrent pregnancy loss expert.  When she is not doing research and taking care of patients, she also educates the next generation of REI doctors and is the Program Director of the REI fellowship.  Outside the lab, she is an avid traveler and enjoys playing escape rooms around the world with her husband and three kids.

Ruby Apolinar

Research Assistant

Ruby is a research assistant in Dr. Mak’s lab at UT Health San Antonio, studying recurrent pregnancy loss and sperm chromatin integrity. A San Antonio native, she earned her B.S. in Biology with a concentration in Molecular and Cell Biology from Texas A&M University-San Antonio in 2023. Outside the lab, she enjoys arts and crafts, spending time with family, and creating delicious baked goods and meals. When she’s not in the kitchen or at the bench, she’s strategizing as a formidable and competitive Dungeons & Dragons player—because scientific precision and dice-rolling luck go hand in hand.

Elango Kamaraj

Postdoctoral Researcher

Elango is a veterinarian with a BVSc (equivalent to DVM) from India. He earned his MVSc and PhD in Veterinary Gynecology and Obstetrics (Animal Reproduction) from the National Dairy Research Institute, India. He later worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Eastern Finland. His research interest includes sperm biology, male fertility, idiopathic infertility, and the role of sperm in miscarriage. While he started out working on animal reproduction, he’s now actively involved in human reproduction research. Outside of work, Elango enjoys playing table tennis, basketball and loves traveling whenever he gets the chance!

Anne Janae Roshong

Dr. Roshong is a reproductive endocrinology and infertility fellow and board-certified OB/GYN faculty at UT Health San Antonio. She also serves in the US Army as an OB/GYN. A Cleveland, Ohio native, she earned her Bachelor of Science in exercise science at Messiah University in 2015 and her MD from Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine in 2019. After her active-duty assignment at Madigan Army Medical Center, she completed her OB/GYN residency in 2023 and began her fellowship at UT Health. Her research focuses on recurrent pregnancy loss, ART perinatal outcomes, and oncofertility. She enjoys teaching and in her free time, she loves running, spending time with her two dogs, attending live music events, and spoiling her niece.
