About The Mak Lab
Welcome to our lab page. Dr. Mak and her team focus on studying causes of recurrent miscarriage. Recurrent miscarriage is a condition that affects 5% of couples who are trying to have a baby. Recurrent miscarriage is when a couple has two or more miscarriages which is a pregnancy loss under 20 weeks gestation. It is a highly devastating condition for couples both physically and emotionally. 50% of couples with recurrent miscarriage or recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) will not have an identified cause. The mission of the Mak lab is to increase our scientific knowledge on RPL and provide answers to RPL couples.
The Sperm RPL study (PDF) is a NIH funded study to investigate if sperm plays a role in human recurrent miscarriages. Recurrent miscarriage is when couples have two or more miscarriages and it affects about 5% of couples trying to conceive. In prior studies, there seems to be a link between the quality of sperm and increased risk of recurrent miscarriage. With this study we hope to explore in depth sperm from men with recurrent miscarriage and help future couples with recurrent miscarriage. If you are interested to participate the current recruitment centers are: UT Health Austin (Austin, Texas) , UT Health San Antonio (San Antonio, Texas) and Northwestern University (Chicago, Illinois). Centers soon to be recruiting will be Yale Fertility Center, Case Western University and University of Iowa. Check back here for updates.
